Pinnacle Honor Society 2014 Scholarship Recipient: Christina Henderson

Even Christina’s closest friends and family members wonder how she manages to work full time as an overnight Certified Pharmacy Technician, attend classes during the day, commit her spare time to others on the weekend, and still remain optimistic and upbeat about her future. Her response is, “It’s not about how badly you want something, it’s about how hard you are willing to work for it.”

As a 26 year old, second-degree, rising senior working on her B.S.W. (and hoping to pursue an M.S.W. in the Advanced Standing program at UNC Charlotte), Christina is relatively familiar with how “college life” works, but she’s noticed it is far more difficult now to manage work, school, volunteer obligations, family life, and other responsibilities than in her first few years of college. She decided to pursue a degree in Social Work because she has always had a passion for helping others in oppressed populations. She also has a strong interest in Child Welfare. Her goal after graduate school is to become a Child Protective Services Investigator, and eventually have a career with the US Department of Health and Human Services.

Christina plays several roles as a volunteer throughout the Mecklenburg County community and within national organizations. On weekends, she commits her time to the Clyde and Ethel Shelter for Battered Women where she is an active support member for the “Empowerment” meetings. In addition, she cares for children of various ages staying in the shelter. Christina is also a regular volunteer at the Brookside Senior Living Facility in southeast Charlotte, the American Heart/Stroke Association as a Survivor Advocate, the American Diabetes Association, and several Mecklenburg County public and private schools as a mentor/tutor.

In addition to Pinnacle, she is a member of Alpha Sigma Lambda, Iota Iota Iota (Triota) Women and Gender Studies Honor Society, and Alpha Phi Omega National Co-ed Service Fraternity. Her ambition is to earn a place in the Phi Alpha Social Work Honor Society before she graduates in May 2016. She also recently became engaged and plans to marry to soon after she completes graduate school.
