During her career of 36 years at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, Kathi Baucom worked passionately to help students plan for and attain their educational goals. The Baucom Scholarship for adult learners reflects her continuing commitment to support the educational achievement of nontraditional students.
Kathi began her career at the university as an admissions counselor and, after serving in various positions was named Director of Admissions, a position she held for 14 years. Subsequently, she became the University Registrar. In 1998, Kathi was appointed to the position of Associate Provost for Enrollment Management and oversaw a division with seven administrative offices.
As Associate Provost, Kathi was responsible for the Offices of Undergraduate Admissions, Student Financial Aid, Registration and Records, Adult Students and Evening Services (OASES), Student Services Call Center, Residency Determination Office and Disability Services. Among her many initiatives, Kathi established the university’s first student services call center, created a centralized residency review office, and developed the framework for the 49er Finish Program, an award winning outreach program for adult learners. Kathi also played a central role in implementing the nationally competitive Levine Scholars Program for entering freshmen.
In 2011, Kathi was recognized for her significant contributions to the educational mission of the university by being awarded the title of Honorary Alumna by the UNC Charlotte Alumni Association. During that same year, she received the Apex Award for Student Success, a national award which recognized her work toward enhancing the administration and delivery of student services. Kathi was selected by UNC Charlotte to participate in the Harvard Institute for Life Long Education and the Bryn Mawr Summer Institute for Women in Higher Education. She also served as the President of the two-state Carolinas Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers.
Kathi holds a Master of Education degree in Student Personnel and Counseling and a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from the University of Georgia. She is married to Don Baucom and has one son, Chad Baucom, who is a graduate of UNC Charlotte.
Kathi is a generous and loyal supporter of UNC Charlotte. By establishing the Kathi M. Baucom Scholarship, she has demonstrated her commitment to ensure adult and nontraditional students can achieve their educational goals.
