Janet Deal Daniel is the director of the Office of Adult Students and Extended Services at UNC Charlotte. As a graduate of Winthrop University with an Educational Specialist degree in Leadership and Supervision, she has worked in higher education in several capacities: teaching, consulting, program development, and leadership. In addition to her passion for working with students at the university, she cherishes time with family, writing, travel, exercise, and reading.

During her career in higher education at the university and community college levels, Janet has developed credit and non-credit seminars, written course curricula, presented national webinars and directed student services programs. To further support the academic and career goals of students, she has taught courses and authored and co-authored papers and national and local grants. She received a $1 million endowed grant from the Barnard Osher Foundation for Reentry Student Scholarships for UNC Charlotte.

Janet is a mentor and advocate for adult education. She enhances learning opportunities for professionals and adult students by writing grants to support hosting national and regional conferences. She coordinated an adult learner conference sponsored by UNC Charlotte and the North Carolina Adult Education Association. In addition, as an active member of the American Association for Adult and Continuing Education and the National Academic Advising Association, she participates in the organizations’ development and presents papers at national conferences. She is a founding leader of the Association for Non-Traditional Students in Higher Education (ANTSHE). She has served as conference director and host for two national ANTSHE conferences in Charlotte. For her exemplary leadership and commitment to adult education, she received the ANTSHE Honorary Lifetime Membership!

As a leader in higher education, Janet is engaged in a variety of educational leadership opportunities. She has served on the executive board of Phi Kappa Phi as President and Secretary at UNC Charlotte. She co-authored a paper on the 49er Finish Program published by the American Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers. She has presented two international webinars on adult learners, and she serves as a consultant on developing programs and services in higher education for adult learners.

She is a proud alumna of the BRIDGES Academic Leadership Program for Women sponsored by the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. At UNC Charlotte she was selected Woman of the Year. In addition, on the UNC Charlotte campus, she received one of the highest awards bestowed; she was selected UNC Charlotte Employee of the Year!

Fun Facts about Janet: Janet enjoys family and friend get-togethers, supporting community and church service projects, fundraising, reading (especially mysteries), and traveling. Most interesting places to travel, so far, have been Israel and South Korea. Most beautiful place she has visited is Switzerland.

The Janet Deal Daniel Scholarship

The Janet Deal Daniel Scholarship was established to honor the accomplishments and contributions of Janet Daniel, for over 25 years of service in higher education developing programs designed for adult learners and the first director of Disability Services, Academic Advising and Learning Assistance Services, and the Office of Adult Students and Extended Services at UNC Charlotte. For her commitment to founding the Office of Adult Students and Extended Services at UNC Charlotte, Janet was honored by the University in 2019 with the Janet Deal Daniel Scholarship administered through the OASES department.
