Donna B. Malmgren Memorial Scholarship

The Donna B. Malmgren Memorial Scholarship was established by Dr. Edward (Ed) Malmgren, a member of the UNC Charlotte faculty who retired in 2012, to honor the loving memory of his late wife Donna who received undergraduate and graduate degrees in nursing from UNC Charlotte and to celebrate the role this University had on the Malmgren family.

The Donna B. Malmgren Memorial Scholarship is an endowed scholarship which provides annual support in perpetuity to nontraditional students enrolled in a degree program in the School of Nursing at UNC Charlotte. Fund proceeds are to provide student recipient(s) with financial resources for academic support, and will be for amounts that, when added to any other awards, loans, and grants will not exceed the annual cost of attendance.

Donna began her college degree at UNC Greensboro in 1963. Family reasons required that she interrupt her education and return home in 1964 to care for her mother and to raise her nine-year-old sister. Donna worked full time and continued her education part time at Gaston College. She continued her education at UNC Charlotte.

After her sister graduated from UNC Charlotte in 1977, Donna who was married with two children, returned to UNC Charlotte full time and earned her undergraduate nursing degree in 1984. While working as a nurse, she returned to school and earned her master’s degree in 1996. Donna became a Certified Lactation Consultant at Novant Health Nursing Mother’s Place. In her spare time, she became an avid 49’er soccer fan, loved to hike with the family dogs, and was a voracious reader of mysteries.

Donna and Ed are proud 49er parents, with their son earning an undergraduate degree in computer science from UNC Charlotte.
